The Top Benefits of Ageing
All too often we can get bogged down on the negatives of getting older. Sometimes it can seem like every advert on tv is telling us to fight the signs of ageing whether it’s to get the skin of a 30-year-old or the abs of an Olympic athlete. But in reality, there are a lot of things to be thankful for when we hit our golden years.
Here are our top four reasons to be grateful about maturing into late adulthood.
Fewer colds
You’ll be pleased to hear that it’s not just the brain that gets wiser, our immune systems do too. Each time our bodies react to a new potential danger, it retains this information as an “immune memory” so that the next time it turns up, our white blood cells know how to respond.
A study at the University of Queensland found that this memory can last up to 40 or 50 years in some cases. Whilst it does begin to drop in your 70s and 80s, there’s a good sweet spot between the ages of 40 and 70. So, whilst your kids might complain about getting two or three colds each year, over 50s only average one or two.
Happier outlook on life
According to a 2019 survey of over 300,000 adults, those in their 70’s tend to be happier, more satisfied and feel a greater sense of self-worth. Another 2014 Princeton University study found people “peaked” in happiness at the ages of 23 and 69.
So, what makes this age group so happy? Paul Krismer, a happiness expert and engagement speaker, states that older individuals tend to value experiences with friends and loved ones, rather than materialistic goods. This focus on the present pulls people into a state of contentment, instead of worrying about the future.
Better sex
Great sex after 60? The research all point to yes! It might be different than sex in your early 20’s, but the need for intimacy is timeless. According to a study on sexual activity, half of women in their 80’s experience an orgasm 'always' or 'most of the time' during sex. Another study reported that over 74% of men and 70% of women over 60 found greater sexual satisfaction than they did when they were in their 40’s. No matter your age or gender, there is no need to give up an exciting sex life in your golden years.
Smarter and wiser
We’ve all copped the jokes around the dinner table about our declining memory or even experienced it first hand when we leave our keys somewhere never to be found again, but what if we told you that older brains are actually smarter than their younger counterparts?
The Seattle Longitudinal Study has followed the mental abilities of 6,000 people since 1956 and has found that while older volunteers aren’t as good at maths and are slower to respond to commands, they are actually better in their late 40s and 50s than they were in their 20s. This is likely to come down to the ability to problem-solve in a much more streamlined process after years of practice.
